October 2018

Fairfield Harbour Garden Club

General Meeting- Monday, October 8, 2018 CANCELED

Due to Hurricane Florence and all the damage done to our community, we have cancelled our October meeting.  We will not be having our annual Harvest Pot Luck Social this year.  Our next General Meeting will be on Monday November 12, 2018.  At this meeting we will have a Social Get-to-Gather, a Continental Breakfast with Coffee, Tea, Juices, Donuts, Bagels and Cream Cheese etc.  We hope this will give some of our garden members a break, and a time to be with friends.

We have also canceled the Raffle Baskets that we would normally be participating in at the Craft Fair on November 10.  We did not have time to collect the items for our baskets, and we would not even think about asking our members to donate at this time.  We will try again next year.

Pals for Paws, Inc. in conjunction with Meredith's Cat Rescue and Capitol Cats have been asked to intervene at the Sunrise Sunset Restaurant and Fairfield Harbour Marina.  A small group of community cats are quickly becoming an unattended overpopulation problem.  Initially our organizations were called to address kittens and an adult cat "left behind" when Sunrise Sunset closed.

As we found sponsorship for the kittens and assessed the situation, we've identified 3 adult cats.  Two are pregnant females.  There are approximately 12 cats and kittens that require surgery for sterilization, socialization and adoption (the kittens), and community support to be monitored as working cats at the docks (feral adults).  Without these resources, there will be a feline population explosion at this location in less than 18 months.

Your local animal rescue and affordable spay/neuter programs are able to foster, provide surgical transportation/recovery fostering and kitten adoption.  To make the undertaking successful each of these animals will require spay/neuter.  The cost is $37.50 per cat.  Community donations to Pals for Paws (specifying the Fairfield Harbor Marina colony) are essential to the success of this population stabilization.

Your FHGC Board has authorized our request for contributions, identifying this situation as a community issue and an opportunity for humane collaboration in the treatment of these animals.  Donations made to Pals for Paws for the cats are tax deductible and can be given to Jennifer Knight at the 3/13 meeting or mailed to Pals for Paws, Inc.  PO Box 14740, New Bern, NC 28561.

September 2013

The first meeting of the year for the FHGC will be on Monday, 9/9 at the Community Center.
The meeting will start at 9:30 and the agenda will consist of:
- Program: Betty Rovins will be talking about Shade Gardens – Ferns & Hostas
- New Bern Ghost Walk – a sign-up sheet will be passed around looking for members to volunteer as docents
- Fall Harvest Pot Luck - Volunteers are needed for the October meeting
- Yard of the Month - Volunteers are needed (get a friend and become a team)
- And discussions about the events and activities for the upcoming year
NOTE: We don’t have anyone signed up for room set up for general meetings yet so if you are able-bodied and want to help set up the chairs, please arrive early.

Membership dues:
If you have not paid your FHGC dues (still $10/household) yet for 2013-2014, stop by the Membership table and see Jane Moore and Margaret Heberlein.
If you're not sure whether or not you have paid, Jane can tell you.
If you are unable to attend the meeting, if nothing has changed on your information from last year (address, phone #, email address), you don't have to fill out a membership form ... just make sure your name is on the envelope and drop off the dues at the brown box of either Jane Moore at 6008 Booty Lane OR Margaret Heberlein at 2038 Royal Pines.
Think about it….
There would be no FHGC without the Officers of the Board and the Committee Chairs and volunteers.
There are a few “seats” that are empty and someone is needed to sit in them; don’t worry about not knowing what to do…there are RED BOOKS with reports from past chairs to help you. The FHGC needs YOU so please think about chairing one of the following (you can get a friend to co-chair it with you!):  Christmas Parade (includes peanut butter pinecone workshop), Historian, General Meeting room set up (it would be great if a few men could volunteer for this), and the Spring Home Tour.
If you’re interested, please let Jennifer Knight know.
